The practice of financial and non-financial support to deserving students dates back to ancient times when education was not as organized as it is today. The origin term ‘scholarship,’ which, in modern-day, refers to ‘the source of funds for support and maintenance of scholar,’ can be traced back to the 16th century. In the 21st century, scholarships are viewed as financial support systems for deserving students and achieve social justice and equality, helping the bright and talented minds prosper rather than feeling helpless due to the unavailability of funds in time.

Today, there are many scholarship options for Indian students who wish to pursue higher education abroad. At the same time, some of those scholarships are generally available to all, irrespective of gender, caste, religion, discipline, institution, or country. On the other hand, other available scholarships are specialized ones and are available only to a specific category of students. In addition, governments may offer them non-profit organizations, educational institutions, philanthropists, or business entities.
