More than 2 lakh students go abroad for higher studies to almost 10 different countries in a year and this number is ever increasing. Traveling to other countries demands insurance coverage which safeguards them from the dangers of traveling abroad. Apart from travel insurance, health insurance is one of the key products that can make their stay financially and mentally peaceful.

Different countries have different rules and regulations regarding the type of plans which are valid for international students. In some countries only, local insurance plans are valid in others, Indian Insurance companies are also valid. Also, the process of usage of insurance plans in different countries is different. Due to this reason different plans are valid for students going to different countries such as the US, UK, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong etc. Some students can take both health and travel insurance and others are only eligible to take travel insurance plans.

Country wise Health/Travel Insurance plans

United States

Students going to the US can take both health cum travel insurance plans offered by some of the Indian Insurance companies. These insurance companies have partnered with Insurance administrators in the US to make the plan valid and usable with the medical providers.

Most Universities in the US put a mandate for international students to be covered under student health insurance plans whether under university-sponsored insurance plans or from any insurance plan from outside whether US-based or international plan. However, some Universities do not accept Indian Insurance plans due to US state requirements or some private requirements.

United Kingdom

Students going to the UK can take individual travel insurance plans offered by some of the Indian Insurance companies.

Universities in the UK do not require international students to be insured under health insurance plans as all residents are covered under a public health care system whereby basic medical services are free of cost.

Canada

Students going to Canada can take individual travel insurance plans offered by some of the Indian Insurance companies.

Universities in Canada require international students to be insured under a Canadian health insurance plan before they arrive in Australia. Students can only take plans from those insurance companies according to the laws and rules of the particular Canadian state in which the students’ University is located.

Germany

Students going to Germany can take individual travel insurance plans offered by some of the Indian Insurance companies. German student visa requirements are such that all international students need to buy travel insurance plans, with 3 months validity from the date of arrival in Germany, to apply for the student visa.

Universities in Germany require international students to be insured under a German health insurance plan within 1-3 months after their arrival. Students can only take plans from those insurance companies which the University has recommended.

Australia

Students going to Australia can take individual travel insurance plans offered by some of the Indian Insurance companies.

Universities in Australia require international students to be insured under an Australian health insurance plan before they arrive in Australia. Students can only take plans from those insurance companies which the University has recommended.
